It is important to be testing and maintaining dKH, Magnesium \u0026amp; Calcium levels in order for this to thrive \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cu\u003eElegance Corals Care Guide\u003c\/u\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eElegance corals (Catalaphyllia jardinei) are a much loved species amongst aquarists - with their long flowing tentacles they add movement to what can sometimes be a fairly static reef.  It isn’t just us that think their wavy long tentacles looking appealing – unsurprisingly Clownfish will sometimes take to Elegance Corals as an Anemone surrogate.  The big difference is Elegance corals will not roam around your aquarium and sting things or get sucked into circulation pumps as they go. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThere are two different types of Elegance available from Australia – a wall Elegance and a cone Elegance.  These descriptions are referring to their skeletons.   Wall Elegance are collected from much deeper waters where they grow in massive colonies that are cut during collection.  This leaves them with flat edges and a rectangular (albeit it slightly wibbly) shaped skeleton.  Cone Elegance are generally collected from shallower waters where the entire skeleton is intact.  Both in our experience are as hardy as each other so long as water parameters are kept stable – as is the case with all hard corals. \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eStable parameters are the key to success with all hard corals.  Elegance Corals are classed as a ‘LPS’ or ‘Large Polyp Stony’.  Whilst they look confusingly soft and flowy, underneath all those tentacles is their calcium carbonate skeleton.  In order to grow they need for Calcium, dKH \u0026amp; Their larger polyps need a large amount of food but little and often as always is the best course of action rather than overloading the coral.  When feeding these corals, you’ll want to spray them with a trace amount of food (brine or particulate coral feed) to initiate their feeding response by displaying their feeding tentacles. When feeding these corals, you’ll want to spray them with a trace amount of food (brine or particulate coral feed) to initiate their feeding response by displaying their feeding tentacles. Once these are present, you can target feed a variety of LPS specialist foods such as Vitalis\/Easy Reefs LPS pellet. With regular feeding, these corals will keep their feeding tentacles out for most of the day eliminating the need to initiate feeding and increasing their overall health. Anecdotally colonies that behave in this way have the fewest health problems and are less susceptible to disease or infection. Frequent feeding also accelerates growth and recovery also providing evidence for better health. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cu\u003eCulturing and Spawning\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/u\u003e Propogating these corals can be a relatively easy prospect as they heal well from fragging. A pair of bone cutters will do the job or a Dremmel\/wet tile saw if you fancy splashing out. Depending on your fragging experience, you may occasionally have to deal with a messy cut as it can be difficult to isolate groups of polyps.   Once the corals have been fragged, you should dip them in a disinfectant such as iodide to avoid any bacterial infections arising and can assist in healing any damaged polyps from the cutting. If you see your coral receding post frag or from infection, it can be beneficial to continue dipping for a few minutes a day.You can take advantage of the way these corals grow by making your frags small. Polyps develop at the edge of the colony. A single polyp can quickly multiple as its surroundings are technically the edge of the colony! Making frags and sharing them amongst your fellow reefers is great for long term success rates of any coral. A pair of bone cutters will do the job or a Dremmel\/wet tile saw if you fancy splashing out. Depending on your fragging experience, you may occasionally have to deal with a messy cut as it can be difficult to isolate groups of polyps.   Once the corals have been fragged, you should dip them in a disinfectant such as iodide to avoid any bacterial infections arising and can assist in healing any damaged polyps from the cutting. If you see your coral receding post frag or from infection, it can be beneficial to continue dipping for a few minutes a day.  You can take advantage of the way these corals grow by making your frags small. Polyps develop at the edge of the colony. A single polyp can quickly multiple as its surroundings are technically the edge of the colony! Making frags and sharing them amongst your fellow reefers is great for long term success rates of any coral. Mycedium.  All of these species have pretty similar care requirements and general identification can be tricky even for the experienced eye.  So for ease ‘Chalice Corals’ it is.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eChalice Corals are almost like the lower light loving, aggressive LPS version of Montipora.  They come in a huge range of colours and patterns that can be eye poppingly bright and grow into large plates.   They tend to be collected from deeper waters so wild colonies prefer a shadier spot in aquariums.  As with all LPS it is extremely important not to light shock your new Chalice.  If your tank has particularly strong lighting it is worth ensuring that you acclimate the coral to the light slowly over a period of weeks\/months.  Always start them off in a shady spot, out of direct lighting to avoid bleaching.  \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eFeeding our Chalice is one of my favourite jobs to do in the fish house.  They are pretty slow feeders so be prepared to leave all flow off for at least an hour but trust me it is worth it.  Dropping a few EasyReefs Easy LPS Pellet or Vitalis LPS Pellet onto their body will trigger them to extrude a net of mucus.  The mucus entraps the food and they then drag the whole net back into their mouths.  For a coral that looks like a static shelf when you slow things down and really look they are extremely dynamic.  Due to their shape they need a little help when it comes to getting rid of the products of their meal!  A moderate flow over the top of the colony will help to keep it free from detritus build up.  \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAs I mentioned earlier Chalice Corals are aggressive.  If another coral happens to accidentally fall on top of a Chalice my money is on the Chalice!  So a top tip is to ensure all neighbours are well fixed to their rocks and give the Chalice plenty of grow out space.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eChalice Corals are classed as a ‘LPS’ or ‘Large Polyp Stony’.  In order to grow they need for Calcium, dKH \u0026amp;
