Best VorTech Flow Settings for SPS, LPS & Mixed Reefs

Best VorTech Flow Settings for SPS, LPS & Mixed Reefs

Proper water movement is vital for coral respiration, nutrient uptake, and waste removal. Here’s how to tune your EcoTech VorTech MP series for best results, using Mobius or ReefLink.

SPS-Dominant Tanks

  • Mode: Reef Crest or Tidal Swell

  • Power: 70–100%

  • Pulse Frequency: Randomized or Short Pulse

  • Schedule: High flow during daylight, taper in evening

SPS thrive under turbulent, changing flow patterns with PAR matched around 300–400 µmol/m²/s.

LPS & Soft Coral Tanks

  • Mode: Lagoon or Gentle Pulse

  • Power: 30–60%

  • Positioning: Indirect flow, avoid direct blasting

  • Schedule: Match photoperiod with mild ramp up/down

LPS corals prefer slower swaying currents and can retract under intense, focused flow.

Mixed Reef Settings

  • Mode: Gyre or Random

  • Power: 40–80%

  • Configuration: One high, one low; alternate pumps on/off for tidal simulation

Balanced setups benefit from a blend of laminar and turbulent motion.

Tips

  • Clean pump shafts monthly

  • Adjust flow every 3–6 months as coral mass increases

  • Observe coral polyp extension and detritus movement for signs of healthy flow
