Many conventional buffers for reef aquaria rely solely on sodium bicarbonate, which has a pK of only 8.0 in saltwater and struggles to maintain pH levels above 8.0 due to a low carbonate/bicarbonate ratio.

This advanced buffer system provides a properly balanced blend of carbonate and bicarbonate salts, achieving an industry-leading pK of 8.6. This higher pK facilitates effortless maintenance of marine pH between 8.3 and 8.5, enhancing the buffer's capacity to neutralize acidic sources in the water. It safely raises marine pH while simultaneously adjusting alkalinity, restoring disrupted buffer systems and increasing carbonate alkalinity for optimal reef health.

If an alkalinity of 6 meq/L is reached without achieving a pH of at least 8.20, the system may be ionically unbalanced. In such cases, check magnesium levels—if magnesium is low, supplement accordingly. However, if magnesium is within the optimal range, the buffer ratio may have shifted due to natural acid neutralization processes. In this scenario, pH can be raised without increasing alkalinity using complementary products designed for balance.

Unlike competing buffers that require multi-day interval dosing when combined with carbonate supplements, this formula allows for daily dosing and can be administered within minutes of related supplements such as calcification enhancers and ionic conditioners.

Directions

Dosing requirements vary, but it is essential not to exceed the recommended dose without monitoring pH and alkalinity (alkalinity should remain below 6 meq/L). Use 5 mL for every 80 L (20 US gallons) daily until the pH stabilizes at the desired level.

pH stabilization may take from a day to a week, depending on initial conditions and buffer system balance. After stabilization, dose as needed to maintain optimal pH.

For accurate monitoring, utilize reliable test kits such as MultiTest®: Marine pH & Alkalinity and Reef Status®: Magnesium & Carbonate/Borate Alkalinity kits to ensure comprehensive water chemistry analysis.
