Goldfish grow bigger and produce more waste than most people expect, so they need more water than a typical starter tank holds. Every tank here holds at least 120 litres, which gives a small group of fancy goldfish room to grow. New to goldfish? Start with our guide to setting up your first goldfish aquarium.
What size tank do goldfish need?
Fancy goldfish grow to 15 to 20cm, and they need far more room than a bowl or a small starter tank. Plan for a tank of 120 litres or more for two or three fancy goldfish. Common and comet goldfish grow even larger and are best kept in a pond.
What to add
-
Strong filtration: goldfish are messy. A tank with a large built-in filter, or an added external filter, keeps the water clean.
-
No heater needed: goldfish are coldwater fish and are happy at room temperature.
-
Smooth decor and sand or large gravel: fancy goldfish have delicate eyes and fins.
-
Food: see our goldfish foods.

Goldfish tank FAQs
Can goldfish live in a bowl?
No. Goldfish produce a lot of waste and grow large, and a bowl can't hold enough water or a proper filter.
Do goldfish need a heater?
No. Goldfish are coldwater fish and do well at normal UK room temperature.
How many goldfish can I keep in a 125 litre tank?
Two or three fancy goldfish, as long as the tank has good filtration and you change the water weekly.
