Heating & Lighting: Tortoises are cold-blooded (ectothermic), which means they are unable to produce their own internal body heat like we do, but instead have to obtain it from their environment. To maintain their desired body temperature they move in and out of a warm area as necessary. For tortoises in captivity, it is essential to provide a source of heat to bask in and create a thermal gradient within their habitat. This means providing a warm area at one end and a cooler area at the other end. This can be achieved by installing the heat mat included in the kit at one end of the terrarium. A thermometer and thermostat is also included to monitor temperature at both ends of the terrarium and prevent overheating. For further heat and light requirements, a lighting dome is included with a spot bulb. Tortoises also enjoy having access to good UVB lighting, which enables them to metabolise vitamin D and calcium. The advanced kit includes a UVB tube and ballast, which should be used daily for up to 12 hours
Natural environment: The CaCo3 sand substrate included in the Kit is made from calcium carbonate and creates a safe natural terrain for tortoises. The Forest Terrain substrate can be used at the cool end of the habitat, where tortoises will love to dig and be happy. Practically all tortoises like somewhere to hide, where they feel secure from the threat of predators. The cork bark is ideal for climbing, exercise and for using as a hide, which should be located at the cooler end of the terrarium. The Advanced kit also includes Woodland Moss which can be added to the Bark for extra habitat enrichment
Food & Water: The Tortoise Diets included in the kit offer complete and balanced nutrition for tortoises. It has a superior taste with natural flavours and is high in fibre and low in protein. The larger bowl provided should be cleaned and refilled with fresh water every day
