ReefControl is now central to Red Sea’s REEFER G3+ range, but Lite and Pro are not interchangeable names for the same box. The difference is how much monitoring and control you can add as your reef develops. Here is the practical version.
ReefControl Lite vs Pro at a glance
| Feature | Lite | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| ReefSense probe and sensor capacity | Up to two | Up to seven |
| 12V DC device connections | One | Two |
| Standard REEFER G3+ package | 200, 300 and Peninsula 350 | 425, Peninsula 500 and larger models |
| REEFER MAX G3+ package | Not specified for MAX G3+ | Red Sea specifies Pro across MAX G3+ |
What can both versions do?
Both work with Red Sea’s ReefSense digital probes and sensors, report readings in ReefBeat and can be paired with the ReefControl ATO module. The module’s level sensor and pump handle freshwater top-off, while its integrated temperature sensor supplies temperature monitoring. ReefControl Power is a separate expansion for managed AC sockets, including control of suitable non-Red Sea equipment. A controller alone does not turn every ordinary mains socket into a managed outlet.
Red Sea’s standalone Lite and Pro controller information mentions a combined pH and temperature probe. An aquarium bundle may be specified differently: the standard REEFER G3+ page highlights its controller and ATO module, whereas Red Sea explicitly lists the pH/temperature probe with MAX G3+. Check the contents of the exact package before treating any probe as included.
Choose Lite if your plan is simple
Lite makes sense for a smaller mixed reef where you want the included top-off and temperature monitoring, with room for one or two further ReefSense measurements or alerts. Write down the sensors you actually intend to fit. A salinity probe and a leak detector, for example, would use the two available ReefSense positions. Decide whether you need a pH probe as well before choosing on tank size alone.
Choose Pro if you expect the system to grow
Pro’s extra sensor capacity is the useful upgrade if you want several parameters, leak detection and additional control devices working together. It comes with standard REEFER G3+ 425, Peninsula 500 and larger systems; the MAX G3+ packages are specified with Pro. The larger tank does not automatically mean you need every probe, but spare capacity is easier to plan at purchase than after the cabinet is full of equipment.
Two buying checks
First, distinguish supported from supplied. A controller’s capacity does not mean that seven probes, two devices or ReefControl Power are in the box. Second, check the ATO and leak detection arrangement. The ReefControl ATO module includes temperature monitoring; Red Sea lists the ReefSense leak detector separately. See our G3 vs G3+ comparison for the generation changes.
