Red Sea REEFER G3 vs G3+: What Changed?

Red Sea has updated its REEFER range again, but the “plus” in G3+ is easy to misunderstand. The biggest change is the included ReefControl system. The G3’s improved plumbing, ReefGate valve and reef-ready sump were already part of the previous generation.

Here’s what actually changed, and what to check before choosing a tank.

REEFER G3 vs G3+: the quick comparison

Feature REEFER G3 REEFER G3+
Water circulation and plumbing Redesigned hydrodynamic system and ReefGate precision valve The G3 flow design and ReefGate continue
Automatic top-off ReefATO+ system, with temperature monitoring and a leak detector ReefControl controller with integrated ATO module and temperature monitoring
Controller supplied No ReefControl controller included as standard ReefControl Lite on 200, 300 and Peninsula 350; ReefControl Pro on 425, Peninsula 500 and larger models
Eurobracing Introduced on models 425 and above Across the REEFER G3+ range
Equipment choice Build your own REEFER or choose an equipped MAX system Build your own REEFER or choose an equipped MAX G3+ system

What is genuinely new?

1. ReefControl is included

Every REEFER G3+ comes with a ReefControl controller and its ATO module. The 200, 300 and Peninsula 350 get ReefControl Lite, which supports up to two ReefSense probes or sensors and one 12V DC device. The 425, Peninsula 500 and larger models get ReefControl Pro, supporting up to seven probes or sensors and two 12V DC devices. That gives you a path to add monitoring and control as your reef develops, without buying the core controller separately.

The included ATO module maintains the sump water level and monitors temperature. If a leak alarm matters to you, check the bundle carefully: the earlier ReefATO+ included a leak detector, while Red Sea lists the ReefSense leak detector separately in the ReefControl family. Don’t assume every sensor shown in a controller demonstration is included in the aquarium box.

2. Eurobracing extends to smaller tanks

The original G3 brought eurobracing to the 425 and larger models. Red Sea now specifies eurobracing on all REEFER G3+ models. That is a meaningful structural and visual change for shoppers looking at the 200, 300 or smaller Peninsula format. Confirm the exact model dimensions and bracing arrangement before planning light mounts or access equipment.

What was already part of G3?

The G3 generation had already introduced the redesigned flow path, hydrodynamically improved piping, ReefGate downflow valve, strengthened tank and cabinet, and a ReefMat-ready sump. Red Sea advertises up to 50% more circulation for the G3 flow redesign; that figure compares the G3 system with its predecessor and should not be read as an extra G3+ improvement over G3.

Both generations offer the familiar choice between a flexible REEFER system, where you select your own lighting, return pump, filtration and circulation equipment, and a more fully equipped REEFER MAX package. Check the specification of the exact MAX model rather than assuming all accessories are identical across sizes.

Which one should you buy?

Choose G3+ if you want the new controller and ATO integration from day one, plan to add ReefSense sensors later, or want eurobracing on a smaller REEFER. Consider a current G3 if its included ReefATO+ features suit you and you prefer to choose a separate controller later. Compare the complete equipment list and total cost for the actual model, rather than the generation name alone.

If you are choosing between a bare system and an equipped package, start with the Red Sea REEFER range and the REEFER MAX range. For context on the previous generation, see our REEFER G3 guide.

A note on availability and warranty

Red Sea’s G3+ announcement does not by itself confirm UK stock for every size or configuration. Check the live product listing for the model you want, including whether it is a REEFER or MAX package. Red Sea states a standard three-year aquarium warranty, extendable to five years at no extra cost when the new tank is registered within 90 days of purchase; review the manufacturer’s current terms when you buy.

Good to know

Why are some points pending?

Purchase points have an approval period before they become available. Your balance shows available points separately from pending points.

How long do my points last?

When points expiry applies, your balance stays valid for 365 days from qualifying rewards activity. Earning eligible rewards, redeeming points or a balance adjustment renews that window. Simply visiting the shop does not renew it.

Can I use points with my stamp reward?

Yes. Add your 10% stamp reward code at checkout and switch on your points. Your final saving depends on the eligible product total and any other discount restrictions.

What happens if I return something?

Earned points are adjusted for returns. Points used on refunded products are restored proportionally. If a refund takes a qualifying order below £250, its stamp is removed.
