You do not need to replace a REEFER G3 aquarium to add Red Sea’s newer monitoring options. ReefControl Lite and Pro are separate controller products, so an existing G3 owner can plan a controller-based setup around the tank they already have. The key is to decide which job the new controller will do before buying another ATO or duplicate sensors.
Start with the equipment already in your cabinet
List your return pump, skimmer, lights, circulation pumps and top-off system. Many G3 systems already have ReefATO+, which independently handles freshwater top-off, temperature monitoring and a leak detector. If yours is working well, a new ReefControl purchase can focus on measurements and alerts. Do not add a second ATO simply because the G3+ package includes an ATO module.
Choose Lite or Pro by the sensor plan
Lite supports up to two ReefSense probes or sensors and one 12V DC device; Pro supports up to seven and two 12V DC devices. Think in terms of the final setup rather than the first accessory. For example, if you want pH, salinity and leak detection together, check the available connections and select the controller with capacity for that plan. Red Sea’s standalone controller information describes a combined pH/temperature probe, but verify the contents of the exact UK listing before ordering.
Understand the optional modules
The ReefControl ATO module has its own level sensor and pump, which connect directly to Lite or Pro. It is useful when you want top-off controlled through ReefControl, but it is not automatically necessary if your ReefATO+ already does the job. Red Sea’s documentation does not state that ReefATO+ components plug directly into ReefControl as a substitute for that module, so check compatibility before attempting to reuse them.
ReefControl Power is a separate option for monitored and controlled AC sockets, including suitable equipment from other brands. The controller alone does not provide managed mains outlets. ReefSense probes and the leak detector are also separate choices unless the exact bundle says otherwise.
A sensible upgrade sequence
First, decide what you want to monitor: perhaps pH, salinity or a second leak location. Next, count the required ReefSense connections and any 12V DC devices. Check whether you need ReefControl Power to switch AC equipment in response to readings. Then verify the controller kit and sensor contents with the retailer. Install one component at a time, check ReefBeat notifications and make sure the existing ATO continues to run as intended.
Is an upgrade worth it?
If your G3 is stable and you only want an alert or one new measurement, a modest controller setup may be enough. If you are planning several probes and coordinated power control, Pro offers more room to expand. For owners considering a whole new tank, our G3 vs G3+ comparison explains what is included in the later range. You can review the current controller collection for UK listings.
