Have Questions About Ornaments?
We have answers. Get quick help for common questions.
What are aquarium ornaments used for?
Aquarium ornaments serve both decorative and functional purposes. They create a visually engaging tank layout while offering shelter, hiding places, and enrichment for your fish. Some ornaments, like caves or driftwood, help reduce fish stress by providing secure spots. Others, like castles or shipwrecks, add personality and depth to your aquascape.
What materials are aquarium ornaments made from?
Our decorations are crafted from fish-safe materials including durable polyresin, high-fired ceramic, driftwood replicas, natural slate or rock, and soft plastic or silk used in artificial plants. We don’t stock any ornaments containing metal, loose paint, or other materials that could degrade or leach into your water.
How do I clean aquarium ornaments?
To clean ornaments, remove them during a water change and rinse them with dechlorinated or tank water. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub off algae or biofilm. For mineral buildup, a short soak in a vinegar-water solution (outside of the tank) can help, followed by thorough rinsing. Never use soap, bleach, or chemical cleaners.
What types of fish benefit from aquarium ornaments?
Almost all fish species benefit from having decorations in their environment. Bettas prefer leaf hammocks and small caves to rest. Cichlids need territorial structures like rocks or stacked caves. Shrimp thrive when mossy hides and tunnels are present. Plecos enjoy driftwood for both shelter and grazing. Goldfish do best with large, smooth ornaments that won’t snag their fins.
How do I choose the right size ornament for my tank?
Start by considering your tank size, the fish species, and the overall aesthetic you’re aiming for. A nano tank needs smaller decorations, while a large tank can accommodate statement pieces or themed setups. Keep about 40 to 50 percent of the tank open for swimming space, and aim for one main focal piece with supporting décor arranged around it.
Do you offer themed or kid-friendly aquarium decorations?
We do. Our collection includes castles, pirate ships, bubbling treasure chests, mermaids, and even sci-fi-themed items like alien heads or UFOs. These bright and playful decorations are ideal for children’s aquariums or whimsical setups that still prioritize fish safety.
Are your ornaments safe for all types of aquariums?
Yes! All aquarium ornaments sold at Charterhouse Aquatics are made from non-toxic, aquarium-safe materials. We offer ornaments suitable for:
Freshwater tanks
Marine/saltwater tanks
Planted aquariums
Coldwater aquariums (like goldfish tanks)
Just check the product description to confirm if a particular decoration is reef-safe or pH-neutral where necessary.
Can I use real wood or rocks as decorations?
Only if they’re specifically labeled as aquarium-safe. Many untreated woods and rocks can leach tannins, alter water chemistry, or harbor bacteria. We recommend using cured or resin-based alternatives that are designed for use in aquatic environments and won’t negatively affect water parameters.
Will ornaments affect my aquarium’s water chemistry?
Most of our decorations are inert, meaning they won’t alter pH or hardness. However, some natural materials such as limestone or crushed coral can raise pH slightly, which is ideal for hardwater-loving species like African cichlids. You can always check the item description for details on chemical activity.
Can I combine live plants with ornaments?
Yes, combining live plants with ornaments is a popular and effective way to create a more natural and enriching aquascape. You can attach Anubias, moss, or Java Fern to driftwood and stone, or place rooted plants in areas surrounding caves and tunnels. Just make sure plants have enough light and space, and that decorations don’t block filter flow.
Can I use ornaments in breeding or fry tanks?
Yes, especially when you’re raising fry or hosting breeding pairs. Use safe hideouts like ceramic tubes, small caves, or mossy domes. These help reduce stress, protect babies, and mimic natural spawning conditions. Just avoid any decorations with sharp edges or tight holes where fry could get trapped.
