Cherry Shrimp

Cherry shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) are the easiest freshwater shrimp to keep and one of the most colourful. They're hardy, peaceful and breed readily in a planted tank, making them perfect for nano aquariums and community tanks with small fish. Choose from classic Cherry Red, Fire Blood Red, Blue Diamond, Cherry Yellow, Jade Green, Chocolate, Black Rili and more, all around 2cm when adult.

Keep them in a group of 10 or more in a mature tank with plenty of moss and shrimp hides. Need a home for them? Browse our small fish tanks, read our guide to setting up a shrimp tank, or see our full range of freshwater shrimp.

Cherry Shrimp FAQs

We have answers. Get quick help for common questions.

1. What size tank do cherry shrimp need?
A planted tank of 20 to 30 litres is a good minimum for a small colony. They can live in less, but bigger tanks hold steadier water conditions, which shrimp need more than space.
3. What do cherry shrimp eat?
They graze algae and biofilm all day, then top up with a shrimp food or blanched vegetables every day or two. Feed only what they finish in a couple of hours and remove any leftovers.
5. What fish can live with cherry shrimp?
Small, peaceful fish such as Chili Rasboras, Ember Tetras, Otocinclus and Pygmy Corydoras. Avoid anything big enough to eat an adult shrimp. Most fish will snack on babies, so dense plants and moss help a colony grow.
2. What temperature do cherry shrimp need?
Anywhere from about 18 to 26°C, with 20 to 24°C ideal. In a warm room they often manage without a heater, but a small heater keeps the temperature steady, which helps them breed.
4. Will cherry shrimp breed in my aquarium?
Yes, they breed readily in a mature, stable tank. Females carry their eggs for around three to four weeks, and the babies hatch as tiny copies of the adults. Moss and hides give the young somewhere safe to grow.
6. How many cherry shrimp should I start with?
Start with at least 10. A group that size almost always includes males and females, so the colony can breed, and shrimp are bolder and more active in numbers.

Good to know

Why are some points pending?

Purchase points have an approval period before they become available. Your balance shows available points separately from pending points.

How long do my points last?

When points expiry applies, your balance stays valid for 365 days from qualifying rewards activity. Earning eligible rewards, redeeming points or a balance adjustment renews that window. Simply visiting the shop does not renew it.

Can I use points with my stamp reward?

Yes. Add your 10% stamp reward code at checkout and switch on your points. Your final saving depends on the eligible product total and any other discount restrictions.

What happens if I return something?

Earned points are adjusted for returns. Points used on refunded products are restored proportionally. If a refund takes a qualifying order below £250, its stamp is removed.
