Have Questions About Eheim External Filters?
We have answers. Get quick help for common questions.
What is an Eheim external filter, and why should I choose one?
Eheim external (canister) filters are high-performance aquarium filtration systems designed to sit outside the tank. They draw water out of the aquarium, filter it through multiple layers of mechanical and biological media, and return it clean and oxygenated. Known for their German engineering, Eheim filters are celebrated for quiet operation, energy efficiency, and long-term durability.
What’s the difference between the Classic, eXperience, and Professionel series?
The Classic series is valued for its simple, durable design and proven long-term performance, making it a favourite among aquarists who prefer straightforward manual operation. The eXperience range introduces user-friendly features like self-priming, quick-release hose adaptors, and removable media baskets. The Professionel 4+ series is Eheim’s most advanced line, offering electronic control, adjustable flow rates, and the innovative Xtender function that allows for extended operation between cleanings.
How often should I clean my Eheim external filter?
Most Eheim filters require cleaning every four to eight weeks, depending on your aquarium’s size, bioload, and plant density. The Professionel 4+ series includes features that help monitor flow and signal when maintenance is due, making upkeep easier to manage over time.
Are Eheim external filters easy to install and maintain?
Yes, Eheim filters are designed for ease of use. Each model comes with all necessary fittings, tubing, and instructions. The eXperience and Professional models in particular include features like quick-release valves and removable media trays, which simplify installation and routine cleaning—even for those new to the hobby.
Are spare parts and accessories available for Eheim filters?
Yes, Charterhouse Aquatics offers a wide selection of genuine Eheim spare parts and accessories, including replacement impellers, seals, hoses, filter media, and upgrade kits. Thanks to Eheim’s long-standing reputation and product support, maintaining your filter for many years is simple and affordable.
Which Eheim external filter is best for my tank size?
The Eheim Classic models, such as the 2211 and 2213, are ideal for small to medium-sized aquariums up to 250 litres. The eXperience 250 and 350 models are well-suited to mid-sized tanks, offering advanced features such as a priming button and easy-clean filter trays. For larger or heavily stocked aquariums, the Eheim Professionel 4+ range (250, 350, and 600 models) offers top-tier filtration with smart features and high flow rates.
Are Eheim filters suitable for planted freshwater aquariums?
Yes, Eheim filters are an excellent choice for planted tanks. They provide consistent water flow, quiet operation, and superior biological filtration—crucial elements for maintaining stable water parameters and healthy plant growth. Many aquascapers rely on Eheim for precisely these reasons.
What media comes with an Eheim filter, and can I customize it?
Eheim filters generally come preloaded with high-quality media, including EHEIM Mech for mechanical filtration and Substrat Pro for biological filtration. The media configuration is fully customizable, allowing you to add or replace materials based on your tank’s specific needs, such as activated carbon, phosphate removers, or fine filter pads.
Can Eheim filters be used on marine tanks?
While primarily intended for freshwater aquariums, Eheim filters can also be used in marine setups, especially in fish-only or lightly stocked reef tanks. If used in saltwater systems, it’s important to select appropriate marine-safe media and monitor maintenance more closely due to the different filtration demands of saltwater environments.
