What is the TMC First Wave Aquarium Set?

The TMC First Wave Aquarium Set is a premium, all-in-one aquarium system designed for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Manufactured by Tropical Marine Centre (TMC), the First Wave range offers sleek, modern design combined with high-performance features, making it ideal for freshwater and marine setups.

What size is the TMC First Wave Aquarium?

The TMC First Wave Aquarium has a 48-litre capacity, providing ample space for a variety of small marine fish, corals, and micro-invertebrates. Its dimensions are 58.5 x 29.5 x 32.5 cm, making it a stylish yet compact option suitable for home or office environments.

What’s included in the TMC First Wave Aquarium Set?

Each First Wave Aquarium Set includes the 48-litre glass tank with an integrated filtration system, a low-voltage DC return pump (500 l/h), a low-voltage protein skimmer (60 l/h), a reef-ready LED lighting system (13W, 14,000K), and filter media including fine pore filter pads, coarse sponges, and ceramic bio-rings. A matching cabinet is also available separately to complete the setup. Please note that a heater is not included but a bracket is supplied to accommodate one.

Is the TMC First Wave suitable for marine and freshwater aquariums?

While the TMC First Wave is specifically designed for marine reef keeping, it can also be used for freshwater setups. However, its integrated filtration and protein skimmer make it especially suited to maintaining stable marine environments with corals and saltwater fish.

What equipment do I need to get started with the TMC First Wave?

In addition to the equipment included in the set, you will need a heater (recommended 50W), a thermometer, a hydrometer or refractometer to measure salinity, water test kits, and a Residual Current Device (RCD) for safety. You’ll also need prepared saltwater at the correct temperature and parameters for your chosen livestock.

How do I set up the TMC First Wave Aquarium?

The setup process involves connecting the return pump, inserting the filter media, installing the protein skimmer and optional heater, adding substrate and live rock, preparing and adding saltwater, and connecting the system to power. After that, you’ll need to cycle the aquarium to establish beneficial bacteria before introducing any livestock.

Is the TMC First Wave Aquarium easy to maintain?

Yes, the First Wave is designed for ease of maintenance. The rear filtration system keeps equipment hidden and accessible, and the protein skimmer and pump are easy to clean. Regular tasks include testing water parameters, cleaning the glass, and maintaining the filter media to ensure a healthy environment for your livestock.

Can I keep any marine species in the TMC First Wave Aquarium?

Due to its size, the First Wave is best suited for small marine fish, micro-invertebrates, and beginner-friendly corals. Larger or more demanding species are not recommended. Refer to the recommended species list in the TMC instructions or consult with your local fish store to choose appropriate livestock.

Does the TMC First Wave come with lighting suitable for corals?

Yes, the included reef-ready LED lighting system provides a colour temperature of 14,000K, suitable for supporting a variety of soft corals and some LPS corals. The light offers a balanced spectrum to enhance coral growth and bring out vibrant colours in your marine display.
