To prepare seawater at a salinity of 32-35 ‰ (psu), dissolve approximately 35 ml of sea salt per liter (or about ½ cup per US gallon) of RO/DI water at 73-77 °F (23-25 °C) while stirring continuously. Always add salt to water, never water to salt, to avoid calcium carbonate precipitation. Once nearly all salt is dissolved and the solution is clear, measure specific gravity and adjust by adding small amounts of salt until it reaches 1.025 to 1.027. After setting up a new aquarium, allow several weeks of circulation and proper lighting to establish a biologically stable environment. Regular weekly partial water changes of about 10% using this sea salt help maintain optimal water quality for your marine life.
