Acopora Care Guide

Acropora are the pinnacle of reefkeeping.  They are by far the most demanding of species to keep and require dedicated aquariums and dedicated aquarists with a keen eye for detail.

Acropora are extremely sensitive in changes to light, flow, nutrients, water chemistry, they don't like changes to it.  If ever there was a coral that thrived in stable conditions it is an Acropora.  So aquariums should be geared up with Acropora in mind before they even hit the tank.  Any money spent on equipment at the beginning with stability in mind will reap fast growth and awesome colours down the line.  So we are talking automatic dosers, calcium reactors, aquarium computers, top of the range lighting, top of the range flow etc.  Acropora are the Ferrari of the coral world.  If you do something they don't like they will either change colour and look nothing like the piece you originally purchased or die.  There really isn't much in the middle!

As stability is the key this really is a species for experienced reef keepers.  Not only do all Acropora need to be acclimated slowly to avoid light shock, as they grow their needs in terms of flow, Calcium, Magnesium, Alkalinity will also increase.   What works for a colony this month may need tweaking in the next so close monitoring is key.
